Melissa has been studying for over one year with our Independent Living Skills Trainer, Patrician Perkins.  Melissa has been working on this endeavor all while continuing to work at her current job to support herself and her 18 year old son, who is non-verbal and an attendee of St. Louis School.  She wishes to obtain her license to be able to transport her son to school and medical appointments instead of relying only on  public transportation.  Melissa has now passed her written driver’s test,  allowing her to obtain her driver’s permit, and is now studying and practicing to take her final driving exam.  Melissa also was recently awarded “Brookshire’s Consumer of the Year Award” as well as an Independent Living Skills Award from the Andrew’s Center.

My name is Bob Coil.  In 2005, I was living in a van.  I tried to live at state parks outside of Ore City.  I had a friend that called protective services for aged and disabled.  They put me in a motel and provided me with food.  It was obvious that I could not handle my money.  The protective services got me in touch with ETCIL.  Working with them, I began to get out of debt and get my finances straightened out.  Because of the representative payee services, I was able to pay off loan sharks that I owed money to.  Eventually, I found an apartment and have been off the street since ETCIL has been handling my money.  These folks are the kindest, most patient, and responsible people I have ever known.  Why they put up with me is hard for me to understand.  But there are kind people and these people are unbelievably kind.  I will always be grateful to them for getting and keeping me off the street and saving money for rainy days.
